Open innovation and new product development: major themes and research trajectories

Purpose This paper aims to review the extant literature on open innovation and new product development (NPD) using bibliometric analysis to gauge the evolving journey of this concept in the domain of Business and Management. Design/methodology/approach The researcher used the Scopus database to search the relevant documents for bibliometric analysis. The data range was from 2006 till June 2023. Citation analysis, co-citation analysis and co-occurrence of authors' keywords were used for bibliometric analysis. Findings The paper charts the intellectual structure of literature related to open innovation and NPD. The five major themes emerge as prominent themes in the literature, i.e. Open Innovation: Conceptualization, Dynamic Capabilities and Competitive Advantages; Open Innovation: Contingencies and Possibilities; Co-creation and New Product Development (NPD); Open Innovation for Businesses: A Shifting Paradigm; and Implementing of Open Innovation in Industries: Cases. Besides this, the study also reveals the most influential authors, journals and countries in their contribution to open innovation and new product development. Future research directions are also presented. Practical implications The present study contributes on academic and managerial fronts. The study provides important insights contributing to the open innovation and NPD literature. From the organizational point of view, the study provides a detailed understanding of the concept of open innovation and NPD that can aid managers in acquiring a comprehensive knowledge of the concept before using it as a strategic intervention. Originality/value The present study identifies the gradual progression of this research area over time. It delineates key themes emerging from past literature, providing avenues for future research.

Durian (Durio zibethinus L.): Nutritional Composition, Pharmacological Implications, Value-Added Products, and Omics-Based Investigations

Durian (Durio zibethinus L.), a tropical fruit celebrated in Southeast Asia for its distinct flavor, is the focus of this comprehensive review. The fruit’s pulp is rich in high-value bioactive compounds, including gamma-glutamylcysteine, a precursor to the essential antioxidant glutathione. With durian cultivation gaining prominence in Southeast Asia due to its economic potential through cultivar enhancement, an in-depth examination of durian-related research becomes crucial. This review explores the health benefits of durian, analyzing the nutritional compositions and bioactive compounds present in the pulp, peel, and seed. It also underscores durian-based food products and the potential for valorizing durian waste. This review encapsulates the significant advancements made in omics-based research, aimed at deciphering the molecular complexities of durian fruit post-harvest ripening and the metabolic shifts impacting its sensory attributes. It is the first to summarize studies across genome, transcriptome, and metabolome levels. Future research should prioritize the development of molecular markers to accelerate the breeding of elite cultivars with preferred traits. It also proposes the exploration of durian waste valorization, including underexplored parts like flowers and leaves for their bioactive compounds, to promote a sustainable bioeconomy. Finally, it suggests the development of innovative durian products catering to the tastes of health-conscious consumers.

Use of Immunoglobulin Y Antibodies: Biosensor-based Diagnostic Systems and Prophylactic and Therapeutic Drug Delivery Systems for Viral Respiratory Diseases.

Respiratory viruses have caused many pandemics from past to present and are among the top global public health problems due to their rate of spread. The recently experienced COVID-19 pandemic has led to an understanding of the importance of rapid diagnostic tests to prevent epidemics and the difficulties of developing new vaccines. On the other hand, the emergence of resistance to existing antiviral drugs during the treatment process poses a major problem for society and global health systems. Therefore, there is a need for new approaches for the diagnosis, prophylaxis, and treatment of existing or new types of respiratory viruses. Immunoglobulin Y antibodies (IgYs) obtained from the yolk of poultry eggs have significant advantages, such as high production volumes, low production costs, and high selectivity, which enable the development of innovative and strategic products. Especially in diagnosing respiratory viruses, antibody-based biosensors in which these antibodies are integrated have the potential to provide superiority in making rapid and accurate diagnosis as a practical diagnostic tool. This review article aims to provide information on using IgY antibodies in diagnostic, prophylactic, and therapeutic applications for respiratory viruses and to provide a perspective for future innovative applications.

Mitigating the definitional quagmire in innovation research: An inclusive definition of innovation as a template for defining various types of innovations uniformly

AbstractA review of research on innovation and new product development points to certain foundational issues of concern such as the use of (1) different definitions of constructs germane to the field (e.g., definitions of innovation, innovativeness, and specific types of innovations), (2) different construct labels to refer to specific innovation types, and (3) the same construct label to refer to different innovation types. Over the years, scholars have cautioned that a body of research in a field of study that is based on different definitions of constructs germane to the field would slow the advancement of knowledge. Against this backdrop, the purpose of this Catalyst paper is to initiate a conversation on the prospects for mitigating the definitional quagmire in research on innovation and new product development by developing an inclusive definition of innovation that can be used as a template for defining various types of innovations uniformly. Toward this end, the paper proposes an inclusive definition of innovation based on idea, outcome, and value creation as the defining or essential characteristics of all innovations. Definitions of 10 specific types of innovations defined in a consistent manner, employing the proposed inclusive definition of innovation as a template are also presented. All else being equal, consistency across research studies in the definitions of constructs employed can be conducive to the advancement of knowledge in a field of study in several ways such as streamlining the curation of the research‐based knowledge, facilitating the grounding of new research in prior research (i.e., curated knowledge), and eliminating differences across studies in the definitions of key constructs employed as a potential confound on the research findings.

Assessment of investments in education impact on the Russian regional economic stability

The study assesses the public and private investment in education impact on the economic stability level in the Russian regions. The paper is based on the hypothesis of the key role of educational infrastructure development in the sustainable regional economy formation. The direct correlation between the population’s educational level and the dynamics of gross regional product, investment activity and territorial innovative development has been analyzed. The influence degree of investments in the highly qualified personnel training on the unemployment reduction, growth of average per capita income of citizens, knowledge-intensive economy sectors development has been assessed. The study is based on the analysis of the Federal State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation data, review of regional budgets for 2020–2022 and expert surveys among economists and educational workers. The correlation and regression analysis methods were applied to determine the relationship between the investment in education volume and regional economic stability indicators. The preliminary study results indicate a significant investment in education impact on the regional economic stability. In particular, the regions with higher investments in the educational sphere have lower unemployment rates, higher average income per capita and higher level of enterprises’ innovative activity.

Design Principles and Restrictions for Continuous Fiber-Reinforced Additive Manufacturing

Abstract In the development of innovative and high-performance products, design expertise is a critical factor. Nevertheless, novel manufacturing processes often frequently lack an accessible comprehensive knowledge base for product developers. To tackle this deficiency in the context of emerging additive manufacturing processes, substantial design knowledge has already been established. However, novel additive manufacturing processes like continuous fiber-reinforced material extrusion have often been disregarded, complicating the process's wider dissemination. The importance of design knowledge availability is paramount, as well as the need for user-friendly design knowledge preparation, standardized structure, and methodological support for accessing the accumulated knowledge with precision. Hence, this paper presents an approach that furnishes formalized design knowledge. Opportunistic knowledge, presented as principle cards, is systematically derived, prepared, and made accessible. Moreover, an access system is developed to ensure the comprehensive utilization of process-specific potentials throughout the development process. Furthermore, we propose linking these principles through a synergy and conflict matrix, aiming to consider synergistic principles and identify potential conflicts at an early stage. Additionally, an approach to provide restrictive design knowledge in the form of a design rule catalog is proposed. The application of the knowledge system is demonstrated exemplarily using a weight-optimized component.

Novel Probiotic Candidates in Artisanal Feta-Type Kefalonian Cheese: Unveiling a Still-Undisclosed Biodiversity.

Autochthonous dairy lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolates encompass a natural source of starter, adjunct, or probiotic candidates. In this context, traditionally manufactured, using exclusively animal rennet, Feta-type cheeses were collected from five farms located in different regions of Kefalonia island (Greece). The primary objective of this study was to isolate and characterize novel LAB, thereby exploring the unmapped microbial communities of Kefalonian Feta-type cheese and identifying new potential probiotics. The initial screening, included a preliminary gastrointestinal (GI) tolerance assessment (acidic conditions and bile salts), followed by their safety evaluation (hemolytic activity and antibiotic susceptibility). Based on the preliminary screening, selected strains underwent molecular identification and were further investigated for their probiotic attributes (lysozyme and phenol resistance, antimicrobial traits, antidiabetic aspects, cholesterol reduction and adhesion, adhesion to Caco-2 cells, and milk acidification potential). The results showed that 49, out of the 93 retrieved isolates, exhibited resistance to GI conditions, whereas 18 met the safety criteria. The molecular identification revealed strains belonging to the species Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Limosilactobacillus fermentum, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei. The selected rod-shaped 14 isolates displayed a potential probiotic character. The best-performing isolates concerning cholesterol assimilation and adhesion, α-glucosidase inhibition, and epithelial adherence were Lpb. plantarum F89, F162, and F254 and Lcb. paracasei F214 and F216, whereas Lcb. paracasei F70 showed potential as a defined strain starter. The present study explores for the first time the biodiversity of traditionally fermented microbial communities in Kefalonian Feta-type cheese, revealing novel potential probiotic strains that can contribute to the development of innovative functional food products.

INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO DESIGN-LED INNOVATION FOR ECO-FRIENDLY CUSTOMER-CENTRIC CLOTHING ENTREPRENEURS

Purpose: This article demonstrates how collaboration in a PAR and R&D research project can be facilitated by a design-led innovation process that juxtaposes design and scientific approaches.
  
 Theoretical Framework: The work was theoretically grounded in an interdisciplinary methodology and customer-centric approaches. Researchers adopted a "principles-driven" strategy as a primary guiding principle.
  
 Design/Method/Approach: This study utilized participatory action research (PAR) as a research methodology, emphasizing the importance of collaborations between stakeholders and the research team. The study methodology encompassed on-site visits, SWOT analysis, focus groups, and questionnaire surveys. The data obtained from all of the previously described instruments was subjected to qualitative analysis using triangulation.
  
 Findings: The study demonstrated that this approach significantly enhanced the innovation of new products and the establishment of brands by local businesses.   The remaining fabric key rings of the stakeholders had an impact on the most recent clothing collection. The development of new products involved the integration of identity, traditional knowledge, and creativity with modern technology, utilizing local resources from the community for innovative transformation and business product development. By adhering to experts' recommendations, stakeholders can enhance the value of their products by demonstrating a preference for environmentally conscious, culturally significant, and artistically innovative products to the target market. The introduction of the new clothing product range received positive feedback from business owners and entrepreneurs, with an average rating of 4.71. Additionally, the annual sales value increased by 36.3%. PAR R&D facilitated the improvement of stakeholders.
  
 Research, Practical, and Social Implications: Creating eco-friendly apparel from fabric scraps will contribute to sustainability. Obtaining this level of sustainability requires collaboration across disciplines and design-driven innovation. In addition, this study demonstrates how a dynamic interdisciplinary innovation strategy can be effective for generating new product concepts, obtaining consumer feedback, and fostering collaboration and learning across disciplines. Lastly, this study provides other researchers and the local industry with actionable opportunity areas and design imperatives for their sustainability-based product innovation activities.
  
 Originality/Value: This study is the first to apply theoretical concepts to practical situations in a specific rural area to assist local community entrepreneurs lacking resources for research and development in improving their performance and outcomes, with a focus on creating product concepts that reflect the local cultural identity and incorporate innovative design principles.

Development and Evaluation of Physico-chemical Properties of Moringa-Woodapple-Karonda Mixed Jam

The present investigation was conducted to develop mixed jam using moringa leaf powder, wood apple and karonda fruit pulp. This research focuses on the standardization and evaluation of a unique mixed fruit jam comprising wood apple, karonda, and fortified with moringa leaf powder. The study initially standardized the wood apple and karonda mixed jam by blending their pulps in different proportions. Organoleptic scores were used to determine the most favourable blend, with WK4 (40% wood apple + 60% karonda) emerging as the preferred combination based on appearance, aroma, taste, mouthfeel, and overall acceptability. Subsequently, WK4 was utilized as the control for the development of moringa-based mix jam. The organoleptic evaluation of the moringa-based jam revealed a decrease in appearance scores with an increase in moringa leaf powder. However, taste and mouthfeel exhibited favourable scores, with WKM3 (95% Woodapple karonda blend + 5% Moringa leaf power) achieving the highest overall acceptability that include appearance, aroma, taste, mouth feel, texture and body of jam. The study also explored the physio-chemical properties of the treatments, including total soluble solids, titratable acidity, pH, ascorbic acid, total phenol, and sugar content. The statistical analysis was used Complete Randomized Design with six treatments and three replications in each. Notably, WKM6 (12.5% Moringa) demonstrated the highest gel and rupture strength, indicating a robust texture. The findings contribute to the development of innovative fruit-based products with enhanced nutritional profiles, emphasizing the potential of moringa as a valuable ingredient in mixed fruit jams.

The Indonesian Migrant Workers Union (SBMI) is an organization that represents the interests of Indonesian migrant workers. SBMI aims to advocate for the rights of migrant workers in Indonesia, protect them from exploitation, and improve their working conditions and welfare. Through the learning and development of accounting systems, promotion management, digital marketing, and innovative product development for digital-based economic groups, the Indonesian Migrant Workers Union (SBMI) is expected to provide a good opportunity to enhance personal and family economics. The Community Service Team (PkM) from Fisipol UKI collaborated with lecturers from Pasundan University to initiate the socialization and training for migrant worker unions in Sukabumi, West Java. The PkM team focused on training participants in utilizing E-Commerce applications and the Tik-Tok social media application to market their products. Participants also engaged in direct practice of marketing products on E-Commerce and Tik-Tok applications. After undergoing direct training, participants then completed a post-test, showing significant progress with 97% of participants understanding the concept of marketing using E-Commerce and Tik-Tok. At the conclusion of the socialization and training, the UKI PkM Team provided social media accounts and phone numbers to participants for easier communication when they have questions or need assistance with product marketing.

Effect of Sustainable Pretreatments on the Nutritional and Functionality of Chickpea Protein: Implication for Innovative Food Product Development

Chickpea is a globally cultivated legume, rich in vitamins, protein, carbohydrates, polyphenols, fatty acids, fibers, and flavonoids. Despite its nutritional benefits, chickpeas contain antinutritional factors that can hinder nutrient absorption. Therefore, we reviewed the various pretreatment methods to enhance chickpea protein’s nutritional value and functional properties. Thermal and biochemical treatments and food applications of chickpea protein are thoroughly reviewed. The review revealed that the physical, thermal, and biochemical treatments were reported to be effective in reducing antinutritional factors and improving protein solubility, emulsifying capacity, and foaming properties. Chickpea proteins were used in cereals and bakery products to meet consumer demand. Encapsulation of chickpea protein enhances nutrient stability, and its inclusion in gluten-free products has different effects on the glycemic index, antioxidant activity, and overall acceptability. These findings highlight chickpea’s potential to improve the nutritional and functional aspects of food products while offering health benefits to consumers.

Zebrafish as a promising model for investigating biological activities of ginseng species—a review

Plants of the ginseng species have a long history with broad traditional applications, as these are recognized as precious tonic herbal medicines since ancient times. More and more multiple chemical constituents and pharmacological activities have been confirmed and discovered recently. Owing to its advantages, such as intuitiveness, cheap, easy to operate, and high-throughput screening, zebrafish has become a very popular model at present. Recently, more and more toxicity tests, bio-activity evaluation, and mechanism studies have been achieved via zebrafish models, many of which were focused on the nature of products, including monomers, extracts, and formulas from ginseng species. This review summarizes the recent pharmacological studies achieved by embryos, larvae, and adult zebrafish. This review provides a theoretical basis for the rational use of ginseng species plants, thus providing guidance for a better rational utilization and the potential innovative product development of ginseng species plants.

Analysis of Innovation Product Development of The Boardgame "Kewania”

Purpose: This research aims to explore the innovation and product development process of the Kewania board game, analyze its business model, and assess its product maturity.
 Method: The study employs the Design Thinking framework to identify the manufacturing process, conducts a Business Model Canvas (BMC) analysis for business model examination, and utilizes the KTH Innovation Readiness Level (IRL) method for evaluating product maturity.
 Result: The findings indicate that "Kewania" successfully integrates design thinking, creating board games that are not only entertaining but also possess educational value. The BMC analysis identifies crucial elements in the business model, while the KTH-IRL analysis provides a comprehensive overview of the company's innovation readiness.
 limitation: The limitations of this research include challenges in business management, specifically positioning "Kewania" in the valley of death.
 Practical implications: Conclusions and recommendations encompass strategies for enhanced education, pricing, and marketing; advanced development; community collaboration; periodic evaluation; optimized distribution; innovation management; cost efficiency; customer-centric focus; strengthened branding; improved IPRL; team training; and diversified funding sources.

GLOBALIZATION AND GLOBAL TRENDS: IMPACT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ON THE ECONOMY

The article examines the theoretical and practical aspects of globalization and the impact of artificial intelligence on the economy and business. Researching the impact of globalization, technology, and artificial intelligence on the economy is a hot topic that is attracting significant interest among countries and companies. This research makes it possible to understand the current trends in the development of the world economy, predict its future changes and develop strategies that will help companies and countries use new opportunities and reduce possible risks. Today, artificial intelligence has a great impact on various fields of activity, in particular on business and the economy, which has global consequences, therefore, conducting research in this field is of great importance. The modern world is covered by the process of globalization, dynamic changes in technology and the development of the Internet, it needs a tool for the development of business and economy, for this it is possible to use artificial intelligence. The implementation of artificial intelligence opens up new opportunities for companies, such as automation, data analytics, personalization of services, development of innovative products and improvement of management. However, at the same time, it brings new challenges. Researching the impact of globalization, technology, and artificial intelligence on the economy is an important tool for developing strategies and solving problems affecting the economy and society as a whole.

Wound healing and photoprotection properties of Acanthus ebracteatus Vahl. extracts standardized in verbascoside

Acanthus spp. have been documented in traditional Thai herbal medicine and are applicable for the treatment of inflamed skin with wound healing property. Nonetheless, the scientific evidence necessary to prove the herb’s doctrine has not yet been revealed. Verbascoside-rich extracts of the herbal medicine A. ebracteatus Vahl., were therefore prepared. The extracts and verbascoside were examined for their wound healing abilities using a scratch assay with fibroblasts. The anti-inflammatory effect suppressing MMP-9 was assessed in cocultures of keratinocyte (HaCaT cells) and fibroblasts. The extracts significantly improved wound healing compared with the control (p < 0.001). The wound healing effect of the extracts significantly (p < 0.01) increased with increasing verbascoside content. It should be noted that the extract was significantly (p < 0.05) better than verbascoside at the same test concentration. The extracts were capable of protecting cocultures of HaCaT cells and fibroblasts from photodamage. The extracts significantly (p < 0.001) suppressed cellular MMP-9 secretion following UV exposure, showing a better effect than that of verbascoside (p < 0.01). A. ebracteatus extract is promising for wound healing and photoprotection, and a prominent source of verbascoside. Verbascoside-rich A. ebracteatus could be utilized for the development of innovative skin-care products.
